How to Cook Black Beans
Black beans are healthy, delicious, and easy to cook. They are a great source of protein, fiber, and important nutrients. You can use them in soups, salads, or tacos. Cooking black beans from scratch makes them taste better and saves you money. Follow these steps to make perfect black beans every time.
Start by checking the beans for any small rocks or dirt. Spread them out on a clean surface and look carefully. Throw away anything that isn’t a bean.
Place the beans in a strainer or colander. Rinse them under cold running water to remove dust and dirt. Shake the strainer to make sure you rinse every bean.
Soaking the beans makes them easier to cook and digest. Place the beans in a large bowl. Add enough water to cover them by a few inches. Let them soak for at least 8 hours or overnight. For a quicker option, use the hot soak method: boil the beans for 2 minutes, then let them sit in the water for 1 hour.
After soaking, drain the water and rinse the beans again. This step removes any leftover dirt or foam from the soaking process.
Place the beans in a large pot. Add fresh water to cover the beans by 2–3 inches. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Once it boils, lower the heat to a simmer. Add a lid to the pot, but leave it slightly open. Let the beans cook for 1–2 hours. Stir occasionally and check the water level. Add more water if it starts to get low.
Test a few beans to see if they are soft enough to eat. They should feel tender but not mushy. If they aren’t ready, cook them a little longer.
Add salt and other seasonings near the end of cooking. Garlic, onion, cumin, or bay leaves add great flavor. Adding salt too early can make the beans tough, so wait until they are nearly done.
When the beans finish cooking, drain the extra water if needed. Serve them right away, or store them in an airtight container. You can refrigerate them for up to 5 days or freeze them for longer storage.
Cooking black beans at home is simple and rewarding. You control the flavor and texture, and you avoid added preservatives. Follow these steps, and you’ll have tasty black beans ready for any dish. Enjoy your homemade beans and the healthy benefits they bring!
